Rustic Kitchen Decor with Cast Iron: Paper Towel Holders, Trivets and Hooks

Most kitchens don't need a remodel to feel warmer. They need a few things that get used every day and happen to look good doing it. The paper towel roll that tips over every time you grab a sheet. The hot pan that ends up on a folded dish towel because there's nowhere else to put it. The apron hanging off a cabinet knob. Those are the spots where a heavy, well-made piece of cast iron earns its place.

Here's how we'd pick rustic cast iron for a kitchen, starting with the counter and working up the wall, with the pieces from our Kitchen collection that fit each job.

Start with the counter: a cast iron paper towel holder

A freestanding paper towel holder is the easiest place to start because it solves a real annoyance. Lightweight holders slide around and tip when you tear a sheet one-handed. Cast iron has enough weight in the base to stay put, and it gives the counter one sculptural piece without adding clutter.

The design is where you get to have fun. A rooster paper towel holder (12.5 inches tall) is the classic farmhouse choice. The horse paper towel holder suits a ranch or western kitchen, and the bear paper towel holder looks right in a cabin. If your kitchen leans coastal, there's a blue whale and an octopus. For something a little playful, the weathered copper frog paper towel holder uses the frog's stretched-out leg as the post, and there's a stretching cat too. The rustic copper mushroom paper towel holder suits a woodland or cottage kitchen.

What to check before you buy

  • Height. Ours run from about 12 to 18.5 inches tall. Measure the gap under your upper cabinets if the holder will live against the backsplash.
  • Footprint. A wide base is steadier, but it takes counter space. The rooster base is about 6.5 inches across.
  • Assembly. Some holders ship in two parts. The horse holder, for example, ships unassembled, so check the product page.
  • Finish. Black and dark brown go with almost anything. Copper and blue finishes work better as a deliberate accent.

Trivets that work hard and still look good

A trivet is one of those things you don't think about until a hot casserole dish leaves a ring on the table. Cast iron trivets handle the heat and are heavy enough that they don't skate around when you set a pot down. The open patterns let heat escape instead of trapping it.

The nice part is that a good trivet doesn't have to go back in a drawer. Our red rooster trivet (7.5 inches round, with roses around the rooster) can hang on the wall or lean on a shelf between meals. The heart trivet in distressed white brings a lighter cottage look, and the black fish trivet is an easy pick for a lake house or beach kitchen. Hand wash them and dry them right away to keep the finish looking good.

Hooks for tea towels, aprons and oven mitts

Kitchens run out of hanging space fast. One or two cast iron hooks near the stove or sink give the tea towel, the apron and the oven mitt a home that isn't the oven door handle.

For a farmhouse kitchen, the rooster wall hook is about 6.3 inches tall in a weathered finish, so it's sized for a towel or an apron loop. If you want a pop of color, the red rooster wall hook is taller at 9.6 inches and has a double hook. Mounting screws aren't included with either, so pick hardware that suits your wall. Use anchors in drywall, or screw into a stud or a wood backer board if you plan to hang anything heavy.

There are plenty more shapes (horseshoes, stars, branches, animals) in our decorative hooks collection, and our cast iron wall hooks buyer's guide covers spacing and installation in more detail.

A little wall decor goes a long way

Once the working pieces are in, one sign is usually enough. The Rise and Shine rooster sign is a big statement at 24 inches across, so it suits a long wall or the space above a window. The Farmers Market sign with a chicken is smaller (12 by 8.5 inches) and hangs from a rope, which works over a coffee station or in a narrow gap between cabinets. For a laugh, the House Rules plaque reads "#1 Mom's the Boss, #2 See Rule #1."

If the kitchen doubles as the spot where everyone gathers on a Friday, a small rooster bottle opener by the fridge keeps the theme going. Our bar gifts guide has more openers if you want a different design.

How to keep it from looking overdone

Pick one motif and one or two finishes. A black rooster paper towel holder, a red rooster trivet and one red rooster hook read as a plan. Five different animals in five finishes read as a garage sale. Let wood, white tile or a plain wall do the rest. Kitchen pieces make easy gifts

With the holidays coming up, kitchen cast iron is a safe gift for the friend with a new house or the host who always cooks. A trivet tied up with a couple of linen tea towels makes a nice housewarming or hostess bundle. A paper towel holder in a design that matches someone's style (the horse for the friend who rides, the frog for the gardener) shows you paid attention. If you're shopping for true holiday pieces, our holiday cast iron guide covers stocking holders, bells and lanterns.

For shop owners: kitchen cast iron at wholesale

If you run a gift shop or home store, kitchen pieces are easy to sell because customers can picture using them. A paper towel holder or trivet looks good on a display table and answers the "what is it for" question by itself. Our Trade Showroom lists 370 wholesale cast iron and metal pieces, kitchen included, with a $200 opening order minimum and a $150 reorder minimum. Most in-stock orders dispatch in 1 to 3 days.

Example only, to show the math: if a trivet costs you $10 at wholesale and you price it at keystone (double your cost), it retails at $20 and you keep a 50% margin. Run your own numbers in the retail markup calculator, and see our pricing guide for when to go above or below keystone.

Cast iron kitchen decor FAQ

What decor works in a farmhouse kitchen?

Start with useful pieces in natural materials: wood, cast iron, linen and stoneware. A cast iron paper towel holder, a trivet and a hook or two cover the daily jobs, and one sign or plaque is usually enough on the walls.

Can a cast iron trivet go under a hot pot?

Yes, that's what it's made for. Cast iron handles the heat and protects the table or counter underneath. Hand wash it and dry it thoroughly to protect the finish.

Are cast iron hooks good for kitchen towels?

Yes. A hook sized for a towel or apron loop is a good fit, like our rooster hooks. Mount it with screws and anchors that suit your wall, since hardware isn't included.

Will a cast iron paper towel holder tip over?

It's much less likely to than a lightweight holder, because the cast iron base is heavy. Pick one with a wide base if you tend to tear sheets one-handed.

What markup do shops use on kitchen decor?

Keystone (retail at double the wholesale cost) is a common starting point for decor. Check your own costs and local prices with the retail markup calculator.

Pick your first piece

Stand at your counter and look for the one thing that bugs you most, whether that's the tipping paper towel roll, the pan with nowhere to go or the towel on the oven door. Fix that one first.
