Natural Patina on Unfinished Iron
Some of our cast iron pieces are intentionally left in a natural, unfinished iron. Over time, they can develop a natural patina—a darker, aged look that forms with normal handling, humidity, and exposure to the environment. This evolving finish is part of the character of natural iron.
Patina vs. Rust (What to Expect)
Patina is typically even, darkening, and “aged” in appearance. Rust can show up as orange/brown spotting or powdery areas, especially in humid spaces or outdoors. Light surface rust can be normal on natural iron and often blends into the rustic look—but heavier rust can continue to spread if the piece stays damp.
Optional Protection (If You Prefer Less Rust)
If you’d like to slow oxidation, apply a thin coat of clear paste wax (or a light layer of mineral oil) and buff dry. Reapply occasionally, especially for outdoor décor or high-humidity areas.
Protective Coating Maintenance (Painted/Sealed Pieces)
If your cast iron piece has a painted, powder-coated, or sealed finish, periodically check for chips or wear. Touch up exposed areas with an appropriate paint or protective sealer to help prevent rust from starting at bare spots.
Handcrafted Quality & Natural Variation
Our cast iron products are handcrafted. Slight variations in texture, color tone, cast markings, and finish are normal and expected—these unique differences are part of what makes each piece special and are not considered defects.
